Somali Independence Day in MN

Laas Caanood more than Kismayo deserves the President's attention By Osman Hassan Oct. 29, 2012

Las Anod
Since their invasions of the regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn, (now the Khatumo State of Somalia) in October 2007 and their occupation of Laas caanood, the capital of the SSC regions, oppression of the people and suppression of the media had been Somaliland's main weapons of terror and clan colonisation: weapons aimed at cowing the defenceless population to submission and suppressing any news coverage of their actions. In the face of a defiant population, determined to resist the one clan colonisation, occupation and secession, the occupiers had resorted to heinous crimes including targeted assassinations, indiscriminate detentions and imprisonments, land grabbing, ethnic-cleansing and outright massacres of nomads and captured prisoners at the clashes in Kalshaale and Sool Joogto in the Buuhoodle region. Not even school children have been spared, who, when they exercise their inalienable God-given right to oppose the secession and defend the union, are bundled into prisons or taken away to notorious detention centres in the secessionist enclave. This measure is used both as a deterrent to discourage other children from engaging in anti occupation activities and as a moral blackmail against all parents and the wider public not to oppose the occupation and their secession.
In their self-defeating campaign to impose news blackouts on the opposition to the secession in the SSC regions ever reaching the outside world, the authority in Hargeisa has made well-nigh impossible the work of local journalists and stringers reporting for Somali satellite TV stations in the UK and other media. When all other restrictive punitive actions have failed to dissuade the journalists from performing their duties, the Somaliland authority has once again taken a leaf out of al-Shabab's book. Just as the Jihadists forcefully impose their fanatical ideology on an unwilling population, so are the secessionists forcing their treacherous senseless secession on all the other four recalcitrant unionist clans in northern Somalia.
And just as al-Shababab assassinates journalists to thwart negative reporting on its activities, so has Somaliland now followed suit. The first victim of this strategy is 25-year-old Ahmed Farah Sakin, a reporter for the Somali London-based Universal TV station. His murder is meant to to serve as a lesson for others. Three assailants, reportedly wearing government military uniforms, shot him as he was returning to his home. His crime in the eyes of Somaliland was to report on widespread demonstrations in Lascanod and other places in the SSC regions in support of the appointment of the new Prime Minister and jubilation at the recent positive developments taking place in Mogadishu. Such  instantaneous public actions, displaying support for Somalia and conversely opposition to the secession, is nationally commendable but for Somaliland it is an anathema, a punishable treason to their  secession, itself a high treason of the union!
Following this abominable murder of the journalist, anonymous threatening messages were sent to other reporters warning them that similar fate awaits them if they remain anywhere within Somaliland's reach in its occupied parts of the SSC regions. Not surprisingly, and as they envisaged, all remaining journalists have run for their lives and left the region. The international community has hitherto paid little attention to Somaliland's violations of human rights and the crimes against humanity it consistently committed in the SSC regions. Most culpable is the United Nations' International Expert on the Human Right's Situation in Somalia for his dereliction of his duties to monitor and report on these human rights abuses. Whereas international human rights NGOs, such as Human Rights Watch, admirably cover Somaliland's human rights violations in the SSC regions, the International Expert by contrast has been doing nothing more than cosying up to Somaliland, Puntland and the defunct TFG as if personal PR was a substitute for human rights defence.
It is therefore to the credit of the British Ambassador to Somalia, His Excellency Ambassador Matt Bough, wielding the historical weight of his government as the former colonial power in the area, and whose government has in the past been much maligned for mollycoddling the secessionists, that he should so quickly and unequivocally intervene to condemn this dastardly targeted assassination of the journalist and to demand from the occupying Somaliland authority to bring the perpetrators to justice.
UN SRSG, ambassador Augustine Mahiga, always eager to show he is in charge of Somalia, has also joined the chorus of condemnations of this vile act. That, however, would not atone for his previous blatant support for the secession (at one time when overwhelmed by their hospitality in Hargeisa, he took leave of diplomatic prudence by singing the praise of the secession and publicly calling for their recognition!), or the number of times when he rode roughshod over the rights of the SSC regions. One such occasion was during the selection of Parliamentarians when he shamelessly colluded with Faroole of Puntland in depriving Khatumo State of Somalia the selection of all its allotted MPs. Now that he is true to his mandate for a change, it is gratifying to see him bow to the new wind of change blowing in Somalia.

The people of Khatumo had made sacrifices in the past to oppose foreign colonisers and again defended the union unaided against the secessionists in the absence of a functioning Somali government. Now that Somalia has a government, the job of defending the country and its unity is primarily that of its government. It is time therefore for President Hassan to get his priorities right. Lascanod matters more than Kismayo which seems to lately consume most of his attention. Kismayo and the Jubaland regions after all will always remain part of Somalia. And left to themselves by outsiders, (above all Kenya), the locals are able to come to a harmonious inclusive win-win consensual arrangement for running their region in conformity with the provisional constitution. Lascanod unlike Kismayo is the linchpin holding together the union of former Italian Somaliland and British Somaliland. His choice between Kismayo and Lascanod will be a testament of whether he favours: local issues or the more existential national determining Somalia's unity. The  priority of the Somali people, other than the secessionists, is quite clear: it is unity, pure and simple. As their elected president, he should follow their wish and hence provide leadership and moral and material support for the liberation of Lascanod from its occupying renegades.

SNMland suppresses businesses in lasanod while exporting secessionism through thugs, guns and drugs.

Before you start reading this article, it is worth noting that one of Somaliland favourite poster boys have just been promoted to the newly concocted Ministry of Rehabilitation’s top post. Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Somaliland’s Minister of Rehab. Mr. Xagla-Tosiye. More on this later! But before we delve into the business of mercenaries_thugs for hire_ or front-men and their guns and drugs that together make up the largest exports of Somaliland products into Khatumo State, We will first examine how small business owners in Lasanod fare against their counterparts in the hunt for international development business grants. Shall we… Let’s go !
I was reading this article about an initiative called Somaliland Business Fund which according to the funding guidelines is designed to stimulate the private sector economy in the region. Funded by the World Band and Danish Development Agency, this project is managed by a UK based consultancy firm called Landell Mills. “Waxaanu bixinaynaa deeqo u dhexeeya $5000 ilaa $150,000 mashaariicda maalgalinaysa hanti maguurto ah ama wanaajinaysa habka ganacsiga ama labadaba”. claims the translation of this document.
While local businesses from the cities of Hargaisa, Burco, Berbera and Borama are expected to apply for these business grants, small and medium sized businesses in Lasanod are expected to lose out even though they are allegedly under the Somaliland administration; thanks to Hargaisa Administration’s business licensing body that calls for “Experience” as one of the criteria upon which these grants will be distributed. _For example, the length of time a horticultural seller owns a license translates into business experience and because Bura’o, Hargeisa, Gabiley or Boorame districts have been under Somaliland administration for more than 10 years before Las anod was captured by Somaliland forces, they are expected to amass the lion’s share of the funds. Despite being the trading centre of Khatumo’s Horticultural business, boasting large volumes of livestock exports, lasanod is poised to lose out. No Business in Sool region is expected to see a dime of this funding as the so called “experience” factor clearly favours cities such as Burco Hargaisa Borama or Gabiley, over and above Lasanod simply because it was not occupied long enough.
Let’s get high a bit and for a moment look at a different kind of a business; From our neighbors in theNorth, the city of Lasanod imports about 3 lorries of the stimulant drug Khat every day. With each lorry containing 280 mini-bundles that make up 70 full bundles, neatly filling in about 40 sacks; that is a monthly consumption of 25,200 bundles or 302,400 bundles a year. At 40,000 Sh/som. or 2 dollars a bundle, Lasanod natives jew up $ 604,800.00 (USD) worth of Khat annually. Quite a lot of cash that is permanently spit out of this city’s economy, never to be exchanged for any other goods _Until the following year when the same amount of money makes its way out to the North again. Interestingly, recent reports from Lasanod indicate that for the first time khat prices have depreciated significantly thus, resulting in more people to afford. Some business analysts attribute this reduction in price to stiff competition by the thugs who broker this business while some _as conspiratorial as they may seem_would logically see this as a deliberate subsidy to drug more of the natives of Lasanod.
Moreover, into the ideology spectrum and the fervor of the so called Somaliland electioneering, a political party paradoxically dubbed “Xaqsoor” was recently exported to lasanod showcasing a large entourage of land-cruiser Suv’s. The deputy party leader who hails from Khatumo region pronounced to a handful of hand picked cheering crowd: “let’s get our rightful piece of the Hargaisa pie” _perhaps a piece of pie that only the speaker seemed to know and benefit. Sadly some in the crowd appeared to naively believe the existence of such a pie. Remember Hapless Keyse_ the so called leader of Hargaisa’s comical _now defunct _SSC political party, and how after two years he is still in the amnesia of “bringing projects” to Widh-Widh area or Fuad Adan Ade’s admission to a Xargaga Online interview in which he said “Over the past 4 years, Sland has not carried out one single project in lasanod”. The fact remains that Lasanod’s residents suffer from  obliterated and shattered hospital infrastructure; broken beds, no birthing wards and even TB patients rely on food rations from family members. Little NGO money trickles down to this hospital. Thanks in part to the fat cat administrators in Hargaisa who controlMerci USA’s donations destined specifically to Lasanod Hospital.
Furthermore, let’s examine Haglo-tosiye’s latest “projects” and see if there is any business incentives for Khatumo folks in Cayn region. Starting with his recent trip to Hargaisa. Would Haglo’s import business include medical equipments for the hospital he built as an independent Darwiish ? Would he participate and help lead Buhodle Airport construction projects ? or would he accept handouts from his masters who are trigger happy to empower him with a new SNM Militia post designed to create instability in the Cayn region? Haglo-Tosiye clearly seems to have been drinking Somaliland’s Koolaid as he has just been_ as of three minutes ago into this article_ named Somaliland’s Minister of Rahabilitation; ouch!!! Would he make any attempts to return to his native Buhoodle! only this time as the newest thug in charge of exporting secessionist ideology to historical Kalshaale and Maygaagle.Only time will tell. However, if you bet on the latter developments of Haglo, here is why you might just be right:
See…In January of 2012, at the Sool Sanaag and Cayn Grand Congress in Taleex, Haglo-tosiye narrated an inspirational story; A story about how he hired and paid Medical Doctors from India but could not get them to come to Buhodle due to deliberate bureaucratic obstructions by both PLand and Sland. His attempts to use Somaliland as a trustee for importing these MD’s from India were thwarted by Hargaisa’s propaganda and scare tactics, thus leading the Indian government’s embassy officials to deny Visas to their MD’s who would otherwise be willing to work in the SSC region’s Buhodle Hospital.  As a result, due to lack of Medical expertise and supports, many Buhodle patients would later be transported to Galkao for advanced medical treatments while many more would never make the long trek to Pland as they lost their lives helplessly in Cayn region. According to modern Natural Justice terms, this act actually qualifies to be no less than a mass murder by causation.
Additionally, as the Kalshaale and Sooljoogto Military stand-offs seem to cool off, A different kind of mass murder evidence was recently uncovered at the water reservoirs of Shangalle and Sool-jogto in Khatumo region. This time not by lack of access to badly needed medical treatments but by bullets of a bully. Will Khatumo folks continue to be divided, hired to kill each other, or be at a quagmire in the interest of a secessionist ideology that is the anti-thesis of the SSC Darwiish DNA? Will khatumo folks continue to be traditionally the loyal clientele that Somaliland companies are so used to; haplessly adding value to Businesses that are clearly favored and openly funded by development dollars? Or is there an alternative !
Will Khatumo folks in Lasanod continue munching in mouth-fulls of Khat, believing that someday somehow they will jew their way out of the current economic and political paralysis over-shadowing their once proud City? Despite Lasanod community’s daily struggles for basic necessities, The Hargaisa administration is adamant to favour perceptions of a military occupation of a piece of colonially charted land over and above the humans that rightfully inhabited it for centuries. From designing unequal business funding distributions, unfair trade balances to willful blindness of crumbling hospitals, the SNM militia will continue to push and fund its ideology in Lasanod through dollars raised from Lasanod. The three stooges/thugs of Ina-Jeni-yareina-Cambashe and Ina-Habsade who are currently in the business of terror-control in lasanod seem to be all illiterate and oblivious to the malice of the Somaliland’s newest mantra_I will provide you with my bombs and bazookas but never my businesses.
However, whether or not Hagla-tosiye joins the above thugs, one thing is clear: While Khatumo’s new generation of business entrepreneurs and social service administrators organize and gain steam, the boys of kalshaale’s federal fever remains too hot for any cold secessionist ideology.
God Bless Khatumo State of Somalia

Buhodle: The small city that defeated SNMland

It is slowly becoming clearer that the SNM militia which occupied parts of Sool-Jogto, Maygaagle, and Kalshaale have now vacated their military posts and returned to Qorulugud and retreated into Somaliland areas. As we watch prisoner swaps and other related events, one of the questions that comes to mind is whether or not this could be a game changer in the recent khatumo and Somaliland confrontations?
In light of the recent overtures by secessionist Somaliland to former SSC leader, Mr. Saleban Hagla-tosiye, Is it possible that the SSC leadership unilaterally brokered peace in the Cayn _Khatumo State region or are there other true heroes that forced Somaliland militia to retreat in defeat as they have never listened in the past to the barrage of peaceful calls to withdraw. The latter seems to be more plausible.  But wait a minute, First, let’s examine the SSC Conundrum.
Wasn’t SSC labelled by the Somaliland administration as a terrorist organization? When did Somaliland formally recognize the SSC as a legitimate leadership with whom to converse? I haven’t read or seen it, Have you? and if so whatever becomes of the faith of the other (comically dubbed SSC but legitimately recognized by Somaliland) organization allegedly led by the Hapless Keyse. Thanks in part to Somaliland’s flip flop and confused ethnocentric agenda, this other Khatumo dropout might as well  be so jealous now that his legitimate SSC organization has been eclipsed by the former terrorist, current peacemaker SSC one man show. Quite a bizzaro world where right is wrong and wrong is right ! This apparent paradox is not only entertaining but neatly fits as good material for the comic sections of Khatumo media.
Furthermore, If you look at Somaliland’s propaganda these days, one may see that their media spins these events as though the people of buhodle chose peace and preferred dialogue_ a benign concept but in this context, a code word that suggests buhodle city [as represented by a single former SSC leader] will join Somaliland’s geographic dreamland. The fact is that the people of Cayn and Khatumo currently led by president Indho-sheel are peace-loving and have never been on the offensive to grab someone else’s land. Rather, they were always on the receiving end of enemy fire. The atrocities perpetrated by the secessionist Somaliland militia, killing over 500 Khatumo citizens this year alone in the Cayn region will never be forgotten. The SNM tanks roaring in early morning, firing indiscriminately at innocent civilians. The sight of a buhodle mom throwing droplets of water from a yellow can as she attempts to put out fire in her burning house are fresh in many a Khatumo citizen. It would be interesting to know if Hagla-tosiye remembered to negotiate any compensation or reparations for these horrific human rights violations or did he choose to shake the bloody hands of Silaanyo who ordered these crimes _for a personal vendetta against Khatumo !
Born in the historic city of Taleh on Jan. 12, 2012. This blessed concept and regional autonomy of Khatumo State of Somalia has democratically and permanently united the hearts and minds of all things Sool Sanaag and Cayn. Why does hagla-tosiye shy away from mentioning in his appeasement speeches the fact that buhodle is, has and will always sport the honorable blue flag with the white star as per the wishes of its Khatumo residents? Thanks to the boys and girls of Kalshaale whose character and heroism were always in full display, requiring no permission as they thwarted all enemy attempts to capture the last remaining bastion of Khatumo land.
Meanwhile, in the coming days, as Haglo-tosiye returns from his trip to Hargaisa, local clan politicking is expected to hit the streets of buhodle city. His previous nuances of belittling SSC members who hailed from regions other than Cayn was quite divisive and hard to swallow specially when it was suggested that some of these young boys might have died in vain. However, History will soon tell if he succeeds in helping to divide the Dhulbahante people along sub-clans and city regional lines, making enemy dreams come true. Or whether Buhodle residents would be expectedly smart enough to recognize Somaliland’s dream of experimenting manipulative diplomacy after their utter failure to succeed in warfare. if the current peace overtures hold true, it’s possible that various characters may compete for getting credit to have brokered this elusive and untested peace deal. However, if it doesn’t, then we are back to square one. Far from a one man publicity stunt, this SNM retreat is clearly a direct result of the people of buhodle city and their relentless conviction to defend their land from an SNM bully that awaits by the boreholes of balli-dhiig. But one thing is for sure; the boys of Kalshaale will continue to sing poetically: “We are here, we were here, and we will be here to defend our land, dignity and history including the Dervish legacy upon which the modern Somali Federal State was founded”.
Additionally, please accept my apologies if I offended some of my Somali Northern friends who may be allergic to the mere mention of this historic Somali Dervish Movement;  a couple of pages of reading into traditional Somali history and one will easily find who were the true Somalis and who were the British Colonial followers. Finally, a good case in point could be at display at this summer’s London Olympic games.  If you looked at the choices made by athletes of Somali origin with respect to their allegiance to their birth countries, one might have seen Mo-Farah’s Gold medal in the 10k run and he is to be congratulated for an excellent run. However, although he was Born in Mogadishu but hails from the Somaliland region, Mo [notice effect of name change to the preference of colonial masters] chose to run for Great Britain as opposed to Somalia. He was also seen sporting a secessionist flag that had more colours than wiil-waal had witticism. In contrast though, over a decade ago, another athlete chose to run for his native Somalia despite huge enticements from USA. Abdi Bile Abdi went on to win Somalia’s first Gold medal in any sports in 1997 World Track and field championships in Rome. It is no coincidence that in a recent london tv interview, Abdi Bile who hails from Khatumo State was wrapped around the blue flag, tears coming down his eyes as he was carried over by emotions of patriotism and love of his country_Somalia.
May God bless Khatumo State of Somalia. Let’s hope that a United Somalia is on the horizon.
